Super Street Project FR-S gets a much-needed TAROX upgrade!
When the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S platform arrived in 2012 it took the automotive world by storm, not least thanks to its ‘classic’ approach to a sports car: a small, revvy engine sending power to the rear wheels mated to a close-ratio 6-speed gearbox.
It’s back-to-basics handling made it an absolute hit with journalists worldwide, but there was one common criticism shared by many – a lack of outright power and performance. Unlike the OEM industry, the tuning sector doesn’t have to worry about this issue, they just need to find a solution instead!
As you’d expect, It wasn’t long before power upgrades including superchargers and turbochargers were added, boosting power from 200bhp to upwards of 300bhp. Some tuners even decided to ditch the stock engine altogether and retrofit the likes of V8 LS motors!
TAROX brakes saw the demand for performance upgrades, and immediately began development on a big-brake solution to cater for those owners either boasting extra power, or simply wanting to significantly upgrade the stock brake system. One owner keen to take advantage of this was Jofel Tolosa from Super Street Online and his Project FR-S…
‘I opted for the 6-piston caliper with a 326mm Sport Japan Style (drilled and slotted) single piece rotor with Tarox’s “Corsa” pad compound, suitable for every day street use and track days.’ Jofel explains. ‘For the rear I matched the Sport Japan Style rotors, but went with a “Strada” brake compound designed for fast road use. We also weighed the Tarox caliper and found that it was four pounds lighter than the factory brakes.’
TAROX rotors are manufactured from high-carbon steel castings or billets before being machined, heat treated for strength and hand surfaced/balanced to optimize friction surface. The end result is high-performance bolt-on kit suitable for ALL driving needs, from the street to the track.
