Zero to 88 and back again. Upgrading a DeLorean with TAROX
Some projects catch the eye more than others, maybe it’s the movie fan in us but the prospect of updating a DeLorean DMC-12 race car to a 300x22mm 6-piston TAROX brake system was a very exciting one indeed. Yes, you did read that right… a Delorean DMC-12 race car!
German outfit Deloman has been championing the often criticised DMC-12 platform for a long time now, racing them and also adventuring in them to far flung corners of the globe. It’s an attitude that you can’t help but love. With only around 6000 cars produced worldwide, a TAROX kit for the DMC-12 was never going to be a huge seller but when Deloroman got in touch via German distributor AT-RS we jumped at the opportunity to be involved in such an interesting project.
Generally speaking the DeLorean DMC-12 is a little bit of a Frankenstein car. To get the project underway many key components were bought in from various vehicle manufacturers. You’ll find parts from Renault, Peugeot, Volvo, Lotus, Opel, Audi, VW and Jaguar underneath the skin. Because of this many of the brake components are also shared with other cars. The front brakes are from a 1980s vintage Ford Escort wile the rear utilised the brakes a Jaguar XJ6. Neither of which are renowned for scintillating braking performance. TAROX developed 2-piece 300x22mm brake discs with 6-piston B30 calipers for the front and rear axle to give strong and balanced braking performance.
You might be thinking why such big brakes, and with a 2.85 litre PRV V6 only producing 130bhp you’d be right. This DeLorean DMC-12 is far from that, putting out almost 300bhp thanks to a Rotrex supercharger conversion. To complete the race car package Deloman has also installed KW suspension and a Heigo roll cage.
